About the CND Program
The Certified Network Defender (CND) certification program focuses on creating network administrators who are trained to protect, detect, and respond to threats on the network.
Network administrators are usually familiar with:
- Network components
- Traffic, performance, and utilization
- Network topology and location of systems
- Security policies
The CND program builds on this knowledge, providing a fundamental understanding of:
- Data transfer and network technologies
- Software technologies and automation
- Network defense fundamentals
- Application of network security controls and protocols
- Perimeter appliances
- Secure IDS, VPN, and firewall configuration
- Network traffic signature analysis
- Vulnerability scanning
These skills help network administrators design stronger network security policies and create effective incident response plans, fostering resiliency and continuity of operations during attacks.
CND is a skills-based, lab-intensive program, built on job-task analysis and the cybersecurity education framework presented by the National Initiative of Cybersecurity Education (NICE).

Passing Criteria
EC-Council exams are provided in multiple forms (different question banks). Each form is:
- Analyzed through beta testing with a sample group
- Reviewed by subject matter experts to ensure academic rigor and real-world applicability
Each question has a difficulty rating that contributes to the overall “Cut Score.” Cut scores are set on a per-exam basis.
- Passing range: 60% – 85% (depending on the exam form)
Age Requirements and Policies Concerning Minors
- Minors may take the exam only with:
- A written consent/indemnity letter signed by a parent or legal guardian
- A supporting letter from a nationally accredited institution of learning
- Minor/adult legal ages are defined by the candidate’s country of residence/origin.
